can I clean pet urine out of alpaca yarn? I was gone for three months in Europe, and come home to find that my cat had peed on my knitting bag with an almost finished alpaca sweater. I had some leftover yarn (a lot of leftover yarn) rolled into balls in the bottom of the bag and then the sweater was sitting on top of the balls. The urine was on the bottom corner of the bag, so the only thing that has a stronger smell are the balls of yarn. Is there any way to rescue them? Alpaca yarn is very expensive and I don't want to have to get rid of it. I'm guessing that the cat pee is currently dried up? It would likely be worth it to try to clean the balls of yarn. What I'd probably do first is to put them into skeins (rather than balls), and then spray an urine odor remover on them thoroughly, such as Nature's Miracle, and let that sit overnight. Then tie the skein in a few places, to eliminate tangling, and put each skein in a panty hose leg and tie both ends. You could then put the skeins in a washing machine on gentle, or you could soak them in a water-and-soap solution for about 1/2 hour and then rinse them thoroughly in clean water afterwards, being careful not to stretch the yarn. Never wring or twist. Gently press excess water from the yarn. Dry the skeins on a sweater drying rack. If they still smell after this treatment, I would try repeating the treatment once again, before giving up. Yarn can, indeed, be expensive!
