 Can someone please explain to me the difference in all the yarn types!? Like Acrylic, wool, cotton, silk... like list them in softest to roughest and which is the best to use. I want a really soft light yarn that's thick to make a scarf but i don't know what the best one to use... Thank you so much! In all honesty, the best way to tell is by touching the yarn in person. There are some "yarn snobs" that would never knit with acrylic yarns. Some acrylic yarns are plastic to the touch, but there are some that are extremely soft and wonderful to with. I really like the feel of the wool/silk blend yarn like Lorna's Laces "Lion and Lamb". I also like Brooks Farm "Solana" and "Four Play", which you can usually only see at fiber shows, but you can purchase online. Baby Alpaca is another soft yarn that people knit up scarves. I've used Misti Alpaca's "Hand Paint Chunky" and Cascade Yarns "Baby Alpaca Chunky" are so soft to the touch and make a nice, warm scarves. It's a different drape than 100% wool. Malabrigo's worsted yarn is a popular choice for scarves because it knits well and is soft to the touch. I like, but I tend to take special with this as can felt and pill with harder use. Lionbrand has also come out with newer yarns that are nice to the touch, such as their Cashmere Blend Yarn. Something to consider when choosing a yarn is not only the feel, but the care afterwards (machine washable vs handwash to avoid wool from felting). |
