Can someone please explain to me the difference in all the yarn types!?

Like Acrylic, wool, cotton, silk... like list them in softest to roughest and which is the best to use. I want a really soft light yarn that's thick to make a scarf but i don't know what the best one to use... Thank you so much!

In all honesty, the best way to tell is by touching the yarn in person. There are some "yarn snobs" that would never knit with acrylic yarns. Some acrylic yarns are plastic to the touch, but there are some that are extremely soft and wonderful to with.

I really like the feel of the wool/silk blend yarn like Lorna's Laces "Lion and Lamb". I also like Brooks Farm "Solana" and "Four Play", which you can usually only see at fiber shows, but you can purchase online. Baby Alpaca is another soft yarn that people knit up scarves. I've used Misti Alpaca's "Hand Paint Chunky" and Cascade Yarns "Baby Alpaca Chunky" are so soft to the touch and make a nice, warm scarves. It's a different drape than 100% wool.

Malabrigo's worsted yarn is a popular choice for scarves because it knits well and is soft to the touch. I like, but I tend to take special with this as can felt and pill with harder use. Lionbrand has also come out with newer yarns that are nice to the touch, such as their Cashmere Blend Yarn.

Something to consider when choosing a yarn is not only the feel, but the care afterwards (machine washable vs handwash to avoid wool from felting).

Bulky Yarns in Modern Society

When many people think of bulky yarns, they think of cheap acrylic which was popular decades ago. The yarn availability today is much more variable. There are bulky yarns available in different fibers, colors and price ranges. These yarns are generally much thicker then regular yarn and are used for things like winter jackets and blankets.

If you are looking for more inexpensive yarn, your best bet is a chain store such as Michael's, Joann's, A.C.Moore and even some Wal-Mart stores. These stores have websites so you can even browse through their selection before you even head out to buy. These stores usually carry acrylic, cotton and wool blends.

When you want something a little more exotic, your best bet would be to search your local yarn store or online yarn retailers such as KnitPicks.com. These stores offer yarns in fibers such as silk, corn, bamboo as well as cotton and acrylic and any combination thereof. Cashmere is one of the most popular chunky yarns on the market today.

Bulky yarns, also known as chunky yarns, are very popular because of how quickly you can knit or crochet an item. You can cut your time in half by simply switching to a bulkier yarn. The reason for this is that the size of the needle and therefore the resulting stitch is much larger than a normal one. There are many websites that contain free patterns to help you make use of these fun oversized yarns.

Bulky yarns come in all possible fibers and combinations. If you are allergic to lamb's wool, that is not a problem because there are cotton or acrylic varieties. For the more eco-minded crocheter and knitters there are chunky yarns made of bamboo, corn, even recycled t-shirts! Some local yarn makers even offer rabbit fur, llama or dog hair custom yarns!

Today's bulky yarns are not the ugly, uncomfortable acrylic of day's
